Meet the Cast

Lloyd Traven

Called both a “mad scientist” and “plant geek," LLoyd's passion is matched by his commitment to using advanced technology. Lloyd worked in market research and special projects at Ball Seed Company prior to purchasing the Peace Tree Farm property in 1983, which he and his wife, Candy, have grown from “the little greenhouses up on the hill” to an established and internationally respected operation. Lloyd is a technology guru and advocate for small growers. He has contributed to GMPro, OFA, GPN, Greenhouse Grower, and GrowerTalks, and can be seen, from time to time, palling around in front of the camera with Martha Stewart.

Chris Hansen

Chris Hansen received a BS in Horticulture and Botany at Iowa State University, including internships at Missouri Botanical Gardens and Longwood Gardens. After graduating, Chris was assistant director of horticulture for Wayside Gardens, and was elevated to director of horticulture in 2000, traveling the world in search of the newest plants to introduce to American gardeners. Chris has consulted with White Flower Farm and worked as director of marketing at Terra Nova Nurseries. In 2007, Chris partnered with Mary Walters to launch www.GreatGardenPlants.com, quickly gaining recognition for their "jumbo" container-grown plants which, they grow themselves.

Katie Ketelsen

Katie Ketelsen is, plain and simple, a plant geek! From her grandfather's Christmas tree farm, she launched her career as the local HyVee garden center manager. Recently, she did landscape design, project management, marketing, social media and event planning for TimberPine Nursery. Today she's taking the online gardening world by storm at BHG.com, writing and contributing to the "Everyday Gardeners" blog. No matter where she's working, her perfect slice of heaven will always include fresh soil, five of the hottest new plant introductions, a watering can…and probably some chapstick.

Jimmy Turner

Since 2003, Jimmy Turner has been the senior director of gardens for the Dallas Arboretum & Botanical Garden. The Dallas Arboretum is a 66-acre display garden, planting more than 500,000 bulbs and more than 2.3 million bedding plants each year. The gardens are considered one of the top ten display gardens in the US. The Dallas Arboretum Plant Trials Program has become the premiere testing site for breeders across the globe for heat tolerance and extreme climates, including annual data on more than 5,000 varieties of new and established annuals, perennials, shrubs, tropicals, bulbs and trees. The plants that excel in trials are awarded the coveted "FlameProof" and "Arboretum Approved" awards.
