On May 6th, ANLA submitted comments to USDA-APHIS in support of updating the Imported Fire Ant (IFA) treatment manual. A recent environmental assessment conducted by USDA-APHIS, in collaboration with the University of Tennessee, identified additional practices for treating balled-and-burlapped nursery stock and grass sod that were effective in preventing IFA from being transported outside of regulated areas. The research also describes how B&B drenches can be done in a manner that would reduce the number of necessary pesticide applications and the quantity of the pesticide used.

The USDA-APHIS recently announced a final decision on a list of propagative plants that will not be permitted for import under the Not Authorized Pending Pest Risk Analysis (NAPPRA) rule. The prohibited plant lists go into effect May 20, 2013 and include 31 taxa of plants for planting that were determined by the agency to be of potential invasive weed concern and 107 taxa of plants for planting that were identified to potentially carry invasive pests and/or diseases of significant concern from foreign countries to the US. The plants included on this NAPPRA list were initially made public in the fall of 2011 and included a 90-day comment period.

USDA-APHIS recently released the results of an Environmental Assessment regarding treatment strategies for Imported Fire Ants (IFA). The study suggests that the treatment manual should be updated to include additional options for treating balled-and-burlapped nursery stock and grass sod being shipped from infested areas. It also, describes how B&B drenches can be done in a manner that would reduce the number of necessary pesticide applications and the quantity of the pesticide used.

Last week ANLA, in collaboration with SAF, submitted comments to the EPA’s Federal Insecticide, Fungicide, and Rodenticide Act Scientific Advisory Panel (FIFRA-SAP). The panel is reviewing efficacy guidelines that would be considerably stricter for pesticide labeling and could limit the arsenal of chemical options for treating some pests. Furthermore, the stricter guidelines would not provide an exception for dealing with new and/or invasive pests – when rapid response is often required before efficacy studies can be completed.

US EPA, through their relationship with The Association of Farmworker Opportunity Programs is providing new pesticide training materials for farmerworkers’ families through the Project LEAF (Limiting Exposures Around Families). Project LEAF is a program to prevent take-home pesticide exposure to farmworker children. Pesticide take-home exposure occurs when farmworkers take-home pesticide residues that may cling to their skin, clothing, hats, boots, tools, lunch coolers, car seats and any other items in the work environment. Their children may then be exposed to these pesticide residues.
