HRI Research Grants & Scholarships Available

The Horticultural Research Institute (HRI) is accepting research applications for its FY2013 competitive research grants program. HRI strives to fund research that benefits green industry related issues. HRI supported projects focus on: significant problems, regulatory issues or emerging opportunities in the nursery and landscape industry, encourage environmentally responsible management practices, increase nursery crop producers' business or financial expertise, and expand the market for plant material. HRI seeks to support research that has definable outcomes and represents a return on investment for the green industry.

HRI is committed to support annual research efforts focused on the highest priority needs of the green industry. HRI strongly encourages collaborative research efforts and challenges scientists to focus research on attainable outcomes that show a return on investment for the green industry.

All applications must be submitted online by May 15, 2012.

SCHOLARSHIPS
HRI has five scholarships available to undergraduate and graduate students pursuing degrees in horticulture. Applications must be completed online and are due May 31.

  • $2,000 (1) Timothy Bigelow and Palmer W. Bigelow, Jr. Scholarship: Student must be a resident of a New England state.
  • $1,000 (2) Carville M. Akehurst Memorial Scholarship: Student must be a resident of VA, MD or WV.
  • $1,000 (1) Muggets Scholarship
  • $1,500 (1) Spring Meadow Nursery Scholarship

Teresa Jodon
Teresa is the Executive Director of the Horticultural Research Institute and direct activities including research, fundraising, a competitive grants and scholarship program, and activities within the HRI membership, scientific and donor communities. She is the staff liaison for the HRI Executive Committee, Investment Committee and Board of Trustees. Teresa is the CEO of Green Industry Innovations (GII), LLC. A for-profit company established by HRI. GII was created to facilitate with the commercialization of keratin based resins, a product of HRI’s work in creating a biodegradable plant container from poultry feathers (keratin). Teresa received her Master of Science in Management with a specialization in Nonprofit and Association Management from the University of Maryland University College.
