The ANLA Beacon Political Education Fund
ANLA established the "Beacon Fund" in 2000 with a founding major contribution by the Ohio Nursery & Landscape Association, and the generous financial support of other committed nursery industry organizations. A political education fund is used to raise the awareness of Congress and the Executive Branch on critical industry needs. Individuals and corporations can contribute to this fund. Contributions are tax-deductible up to 73 percent of total amount as an ordinary and necessary business expense. The current focus of the Beacon Fund is finding short-term and long-term solutions to the nursery & landscape industry's labor crisis.
Current Beacon Activity
In response to the industry's need for an available, legal, and affordable labor supply, the Beacon fund has propelled ANLA to the front as a leader in legislative strategy development for the agricultural guest worker (H-2A), service guest worker (H-2B), and OTHER immigration policy reform initiatives. The Agriculture Coalition for Immigration Reform (ACIR), was formed in February 2001 to lead the lobbying campaign for bipartisan legislation that would offer short-term relief and a long-term safety net for the industry's labor supply. The coalition has made great progress toward its reform goals, and passage of landmark reform legislation is possible this year. ANLA is a national co-chair, of ACIR.
Practically, the Beacon Fund is the "victory fund" to enact labor reform legislation. While a positive outcome is in no way guaranteed, the Beacon fund has allowed the industry to take significant steps forward in fighting for available and affordable labor. ANLA and the Beacon Fund are also supporting the activities of the broad-based Essential Worker Immigration Coalition (EWIC), which is pursuing labor and immigration reform to benefit the service industries, including the landscape industry.
