HRI Membership

It takes serious research to plant new ideas, which is why membership support is vital to HRI. The Horticultural Research Institute (HRI) was established in 1962 to support and promote horticultural research that benefits the nursery and landscape industry. HRI is regarded as the research arm of the American Nursery & Landscape Association (ANLA). HRI is recognized by the Internal Revenue Service as a 501(c) (6), non-profit corporation.

Your membership helps HRI to continue to make progress and adapt to the changes we face in the green industry. HRI focuses on our industry research needs by funding research and scholarships through our competitive grants program, as well as, initiating programs that will ensure the future growth of HRI and the growth of our industry.

Such programs include:

  • Signing a Cooperative Research and Development Agreement (CRADA) with USDA- Agricultural Research Service (ARS) to study the development and commercial production of biodegradable nursery containers.

  • Facilitating efforts of USDA-ARS, to acquire and support $6.25 million in research funding through the Floriculture and Nursery Research Initiative for valuable work being conducted by ARS and in partnership with the land grant universities across this country.

  • Creating innovative ways to support research: collaborating with federal agencies like EPA, USDA, and U.S. Department of Labor, facilitating industry sponsored research initiatives and seeking alternative sources of funding for research.

  • Publication of the Journal of Environmental Horticulture. As an HRI member you receive this valuable scientific-reviewed publication that gives you the inside track on cutting edge and innovative research for the industry.

You should know that ANLA picks up the "heat, rent and light." This helps HRI to have low overhead costs and because most of our activities are underwritten by HRI member dollars, HRI can be proactive and focus on smart research and your needs.

In additional to supporting HRI research activities, HRI members receive the quarterly scientist-reviewed Journal of Environmental Horticulture and the HRI newsletter, New Horizons.

HRI is a smart investment and its leadership focuses on smart research, and new endeavors that are worth your support. Be a part of an industry group that makes a difference, become an HRI member.
